Why Evinrude Used Motors Are Still Selling
At ARG Marine, we like our customers to be informed about the boat market in West Palm Beach and elsewhere. Evinrude outboard dealers like ARG Marine were surprised to find out in June of 2020 that one of the biggest names in the business decided to discontinue production of Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines. Let’s take a closer look at what went into this shocking decision.
Why Evinrude Discontinued Production
The parent company behind Evinrude is Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). They plan to focus on marine product technology and developing more growth in their boat brands. The announcement was both huge and shocking in the boating industry as Evinrude is one of the oldest and most well-known names in the business. The first commercially viable outboard motor was invented in 1907 by Ole Evinrude. For those who don’t keep up with the industry, Evinrude stepping down from making boat motors is like Ford making an announcement that they will no longer make cars or trucks.
Why did Evinrude make this decision? A big part of it was fallout from COVID-19. The CEO of BRP said that the business of making outboard engines was hugely impacted by COVID-19, which led to the decision to discontinue production.
From all accounts, the decision was extremely surprising to everyone affected. Even the main Evinrude workforce in Wisconsin was told only by a phone message that they no longer had jobs. Evinrude outboard dealers were also shocked and many received tons of phone calls from customers wanting to know if they could still get Evinrude engines for their boats.
The good news is that Evinrude will still be backing up their warranties, and most Evinrude dealers like ARG Marine will be doing the same thing.
BRP also announced that it will be collaborating with Mercury Marine to support its boat brands and packages, including Alumacraft and Manitou.
Why The Evinrude E-TEC G2 Is So Popular
The selection and innovative design features are part of why the G2 is such a popular motor. A power hydraulic helix steering system is built into these motors and the mounting and rigging are self-contained. All major systems are digital, so you won’t see any visible rigging cables or lines, and you can easily inspect the gearcase lube by looking at a visible reservoir. In 2016, Evinrude augmented the already-popular 3.4L motors with a new 2.7L. This smaller V6 powerhead was made in horsepower ratings of 150, 175 and 200.
The 2.7L G2 motors replicated most of what made the 3.4L motors popular. It features an exterior skeleton with cowl sections that can be removed and replaced. As the motors have several different colors available, it’s easy to mix and match for your own unique design. The injector oil reservoir holds three liters of oil, which is enough to operate the motor for 50 hours. Remote oil reservoirs are also available to hold as much as 10 liters. A power steering system with three power settings was also available on most models.
BRP claimed that the two-stroke design of the G2 with E-TEC direct fuel injection had better torque and fuel economy versus four-stroke outboard engines with similar power ratings.
Shortly before discontinuing the E-TEC G2 line, Evinrude debuted an inline-three 1.9L engine with horsepower ratings of 115, 140 and 150.
